With the New England Patriots and Denver Broncos set to square off on Sunday, it’ll be yet another coaching matchup between two of the best coaches in modern football and of all time.
Sean Payton and Bill Belichick obviously go back a long way.
They’re both defensive-minded, they’re both champions, they’re both hard-nosed, and they’ve both been criticized for their ways multiple times.
Also, they’ve both kind of bent the rules in their favor at times.
But according to Belichick, they have way more in common than just that.
Ahead of the game, the legendary coach jokingly stated that they have some common experience dating back to their days working under NFL legend Bill Parcells, adding that they’ve both been yelled at a lot (via Mike Reiss).

Belichick and Payton are the two most prominent names in Parcells’ coaching tree, and one could even state that the Patriots coach has already surpassed his mentor.
Unfortunately for him, that’s not what one could tell judging by this year’s results.
The Patriots have been one of the worst teams in the league this season, and rumors state that Robert Kraft has already made a decision to cut ties with him at the end of the season.
Then again, given his track record and résumé, it shouldn’t take long before he finds a new home and a place where he can keep pushing to pass Don Shula in the all-time wins list by a head coach.
The student beat the master this time, it seems.
