The New York Yankees might be eliminated from postseason contention, but they sure are getting in the Toronto Blue Jays’ way as of late.
Both teams started a three-game series on Tuesday, and the Yankees took the first two games.
As a reminder, the Jays are in the middle of a Wild Card race and every game they win and lose counts.
As of Thursday afternoon, Toronto has a two-game cushion over the last team with no playoff spot, the Seattle Mariners.
The Yankees, meanwhile, are playing for pride and dignity these days.
Well, that and keeping a 30-year-old record intact.
After Wednesday’s win against Toronto, the Yankees reached 81 for the season.
It means that the worst they can finish now is 81-81.
In other words, they won’t have their first losing season since 1992, as Talkin’ Yanks reminds us.

With one more win in the four games they have left on the calendar, they will guarantee finishing above .500.
In any case, they can’t finish below .500 at this point: only at .500 if they lose all games.
The last time the Yanks logged a losing season, Buck Showalter was still the manager, Bernie Williams was a sophomore player, and the team drafted Derek Jeter.
League-wide, Bobby Bonilla was the highest-paid player and Barry Bonds still played for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
That’s how much time has passed.
The Yankees will keep that streak alive and will try to get back on track next year because keeping afloat is not the same as being a bona fide contender.
With the Yankees, fans will always expect the latter.
