Patrick Mahomes might be about to embark on a postseason like he’s never experienced in the NFL.
While the Kansas City Chiefs should still win the AFC West and make the playoffs, Mahomes and company won’t be the No. 1 seed in the AFC for the first time since 2021.
And because of that, they’ll likely play at least one road playoff game for the first time in Mahomes’ career if they advance past the Wild Card round, as noted by Dov Kleiman and NFL on CBS.
Trending: #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has never played a road playoff game in his entire career.
That will change this season as the Chiefs have been eliminated from contention for the #1 seed in the AFC.
Chiefs are 5-2 in road games this season

Now, not securing the No. 1 seed doesn’t mean Mahomes will necessarily play a postseason game away from the friendly confines of GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.
The Chiefs were the No. 2 seed in 2019 and 2021 with Mahomes under center but ended up playing all their games at home after the No. 1 seeds in those seasons lost in their respective first playoff games.
Kansas City might not have as much luck this year, though, in a year where the Chiefs are guaranteed to finish with their worst record in the Mahomes era no matter the results of the final two games.
The Chiefs could finish as high as the No. 2 seed, but only if they win their two final games and the Miami Dolphins lose both of their games.
Oddly enough, Kansas City has actually been better on the road (5-2) this year than at home (4-4).
The issues surrounding the team extend further from where they play, though, as the offense ranks 11th in the NFL in scoring and the Chiefs have scored more than 20 points just twice since Week 10.
Mahomes will need some late-season magic to gain some momentum as the Chiefs head into the playoffs with whichever seed they end up securing.
