The New Orleans Saints are at an inflection point in the Dennis Allen era.
Allen is 14-18 in two seasons as the head coach of New Orleans after he took over for Sean Payton in 2022 and has yet to make the postseason.
The Saints have a small chance to get to the playoffs this year, though, with crucial games against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons left on their schedule.
If New Orleans makes the playoffs, it would be Allen’s first as a head coach after he never made it in his three years as the head coach of the then-Oakland Raiders.
But regardless of how this season finishes, the Saints will reportedly keep Allen for the 2024 season, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

This decision, if it ultimately becomes true, is strange considering how the Saints failed to improve since Allen took over in 2022.
New Orleans’ defense remains similar to how it was when Allen was just the defensive coordinator, while the offense only got slightly better this season with quarterback Derek Carr at the helm.
Allen failed to capitalize on a Tom Brady-less NFC South, too, and needs a win over the Buccaneers in Week 17 to have a shot at the division and an automatic postseason berth.
Another angle to this, though, is that there are expected to be a lot of enviable head coaching positions available this offseason and the Saints might not have a shot at the best candidates.
So, perhaps New Orleans is comfortable enough with Allen to roll with him for at least one more year rather than take a chance at the hiring pool.
