Tom Brady retired from the NFL this past February for the second time in two years, but speculation about his desire to return to the league remained throughout the year.
Brady himself squashed several rumors before the 2023 season, but recently revealed he almost unretired for a second time back in May.
He sprinkled this little nugget at the end of an Instagram post where he wrote – perhaps in jest – that he canceled plans to come back to the NFL after his friends threw him a surprise retirement party.
“The only downside to 2023 was when I was about to unretire in May,” Brady wrote, “and my friends threw a surprise retirement party. Kind of forced my hand.”
Fans were, of course, not shocked by this news after going through this situation for the past two offseasons.
A New Year’s message from Tom Brady, who tucks this into the P.S. section:

Another Brady comeback would have set the NFL world on fire again, but his path back was a bit complicated after he agreed to purchase an ownership stake in the Las Vegas Raiders.
However, that deal was held up throughout the year after issues with the price he was given by owner Mark Davis.
There would also have been the issue of where Brady would play after the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Teams would have lined up to acquire Brady if the Buccaneers didn’t want him, though, after he led Tampa Bay to a Super Bowl win in 2020.
For now, though, Brady appears content skiing with his family and sitting on a monster broadcasting deal with Fox Sports he hasn’t exercised yet.
