Despite a tough loss in Week 16 to the Baltimore Ravens, the San Francisco 49ers clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC after beating the Washington Commanders in Week 17.
The 49ers got some help as the Philadelphia Eagles were upset at home by the Arizona Cardinals.
San Francisco earned itself a first-round bye by virtue of claiming the top seed, and they did it behind a strong performance from Brock Purdy.
It was a strong bounce-back game from Purdy who was picked off four times in the loss to the Ravens.
The second-year quarterback threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns against Washington, a solid game where he didn’t commit any turnovers.
Purdy’s been great in his first full season as San Francisco’s QB1 and he made franchise history in the win against Washington via NBC.

Purdy now has 4,280 passing yards during the 2023 NFL season, surpassing former 49ers quarterback Jeff Garcia who recorded 4,278 yards during the 2020 NFL campaign.
It seemed like Purdy would need at least one more game to break the single-season franchise record, but he got a lot of help from Brandon Aiyuk who came down with a 38-yard pass in the fourth.
Purdy later found Aiyuk deep in the end zone to put the game away, though he set the record a drive later when he connected with George Kittle.
The 49ers must be ecstatic with what they’ve gotten out of Purdy, but now all eyes will be on him come postseason time.
