Tampa Bay Rays shortstop Wander Franco didn’t finish the season on the active roster.
He was placed on the restricted list in August as Dominican authorities investigated him for allegedly being involved in inappropriate relationships with minors.
MLB then placed him on administrative leave as they conducted their own investigation.
There wasn’t much news on Franco’s legal situation until late December, when it was reported that Dominican authorities raided two homes last Tuesday in an effort to find him.
He was summoned by the Specialized Prosecutor’s Office for Children and Adolescents in Santo Domingo to appear for questioning on Thursday, but he wasn’t there.
Now, on New Year’s Day, MLB insider Hector Gomez reported that the star infielder is now under arrest.
“Wander Franco Update: After being interrogated by prosecutors, Wander Franco is now under arrest at Puerto Plata,” Gomez tweeted.
Just to clarify, the arrest has nothing to do with new discoveries in the ongoing investigation, but rather because he failed to answer a summons last week.
He was arrested and interrogated by prosecutors.
The expectation is that he is going to be arraigned on Wednesday and held without bail until then.
On wednesday, Wander Franco will be taken in front of a judge to be arraigned, according to lawyer @FelixPortes the prosecutors are expected to ask for wander to remain in Jail with no bail as the process continues. https://t.co/I8ChB4oLVh
