Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic, after an early exit at the Indian Wells Masters 1000 marked by a dismal performance against Botic van de Zandschulp, has made a rather unexpected move. Contrary to speculation that he might opt out of the Miami Open to rejuvenate and prepare for the upcoming red clay tournaments, Djokovic has decided to participate. The Serbian legend, with a record of six victories at the historic Key Biscayne venue, is no stranger to the Miami Open. However, in the latter stages of his career, the 37-year-old has often given the tournament a miss to conserve energy and begin early preparations for the red clay season.
Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion, is returning to the Miami Open after a hiatus of six years, with his most recent participation being in the 2019 season. The year 2018 wasn’t the best for the Serbian, as he was ousted by Benoit Paire in the final edition at Crandon Park, subsequent to which the tournament switched venues to the Hard Rock Stadium. Although Djokovic was a key player in the inaugural tournament at the new venue, his journey was cut short in the round of 16 by Roberto Bautista Agut.
Given Djokovic’s avoidance of vaccination against COVID-19 and a trimmed-down schedule, the Florida event was off his radar. However, this year sees a shift in his strategy. Coming off the back of a shocking second-round loss in California, Djokovic has recognized the need to increase his playing time to maintain form for the Grand Slams. The tennis titan arrived in Miami on Saturday, accompanied by coach Andy Murray, and wasted no time in hitting the practice courts with full throttle. His return is slated for either Friday or Saturday.
In a video shared on social media, it was revealed that Djokovic also made time for fun, attending a party with several notable personalities including Eva Longoria, Jessica Alba, Marc Anthony, and Becky G. Clearly, the Serbian is allowing himself a bit of relaxation before the Miami Open commences. His fans and followers are looking forward to seeing the former world No.1 in action once again.
