The New York Yankees are looking to shore up their pitching depth.
To do that, they have to resort to outside-the-box alternatives; not just signing expensive free agents.
Yes, they would love to sign Jordan Montgomery or trade for Dylan Cease.
In fact, those are their two primary objectives at this point.
However, to strengthen overall pitching depth, they also need to bring in some lottery tickets and use their resources to help them get back on track or pitch as close to their full potential as possible.
On that note, the Yankees made an announcement on Friday: they are bringing in one of those lotto tickets that could end up helping the team.
“The New York Yankees today announced that they have signed RHP Cody Poteet to a one-year Major League contract,” the team wrote via Twitter.

Poteet has been around for a while, but injuries and inconsistency have plagued his career for years.
He underwent long-term elbow surgery in 2022 and his absence extended for much of 2023.
A Miami Marlins farmhand, he was outrighted to the minor leagues in late 2022 and signed a minor league deal with the Kansas City Royals, where he didn’t pitch at the MLB level but posted a 0.00 ERA in two innings.
He is now healthy, and the Yankees are giving him an MLB contract which means he will be given a 40-man roster spot.
Poteet hasn’t pitched much in MLB (58.2 frames) but has a decent 4.45 ERA and the potential to be much better than that.
He can start, but the bullpen is probably his long-term home although the Yanks haven’t indicated his future role.
It’s a nice pickup for New York.
