When Josh Harris became the new owner of the Washington Commanders last year, many wondered how much longer the team was going to stick with head coach Ron Rivera.
After Rivera helped lead the Commanders to an 8-8-1 record in 2022, the team’s success plummeted this season, as they’re sitting with a 4-12 record heading into their final game of the 2023 campaign on Sunday.
With Washington’s struggles, many have assumed that Harris is going to want to find a new head coach for his team during the 2024 offseason.
Well, it sounds like that’s exactly what is going to happen, as the Commanders will reportedly move on from Rivera as their head coach after the team’s final game of the season on Sunday, according to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport (via Tom Pelissero on Twitter).
“Washington is expected to part ways with Rivera on Monday, per sources, ending his tenure after four seasons,” Rapoport said.
The #Commanders are expected to part ways with coach Ron Rivera on Monday, opening a job that’s more attractive than it has been in decades.

Rivera was hired by the Commanders in 2020 after spending the previous nine years as the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
In his first year with the franchise, he helped lead Washington to a spot in the 2020 playoffs.
Unfortunately, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers prevented the Commanders from getting past the first round of the 2020 postseason, and the team hasn’t made it back to the playoffs since that loss.
With Harris now running things in Washington, it will be interesting to see what he desires in his team’s next head coach.
Could he go after someone like Bill Belichick or Jim Harbaugh, or will he want to give a young coordinator like Ben Johnson of the Detroit Lions a chance to be a first-time head coach?
