Josh McDaniels might not be an NFL coach right now, but that hasn’t stopped him from watching some live football.
The former Las Vegas Raiders head coach was fired earlier this season but will be in attendance at the New England Patriots vs. New York Jets game to see one of his former players possibly finish out his NFL career.
Patriots captain and special teams star Matthew Slater could retire after 16 seasons in New England, most of which he spent while McDaniels was a coach there.

McDaniels himself spent 13 years with the Patriots over multiple stints as the team’s offense coordinator.
He started with the Patriots in 2001 and left to coach the Denver Broncos in 2009 but was fired after two seasons.
McDaniels returned to the Patriots in 2012 and coached for another 10 years before he left for the Raiders job in 2022.
He lasted less than two years there after opening the 2023 season with a 3-5 record.
Once considered the heir to Bill Belichick’s job in New England, McDaniels’ future in the NFL looks uncertain after his second failed head coaching gig.
While he was a solid offensive coordinator with the Patriots, most of his accomplishments are tied to quarterback Tom Brady.
He did, however, coach Patriots quarterback Mac Jones to a Pro Bowl season in 2021, which has to count for something considering how bad Jones has looked since McDaniels left.
For now, the former head coach will just get to enjoy some regular season NFL action without the stress of coaching either side.
