The Atlanta Falcons got blown out 48-17 in the 2023 NFL season finale against the New Orleans Saints, officially ending their chances at a postseason berth.
The Falcons have floundered in the past month as they lost four of their last five games, leaving most to believe that head coach Arthur Smith could be on his way out.
Smith has been criticized for his usage of players, most notably Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Bijan Robinson whom the team used first-round picks on.
Atlanta’s offense was up and down for most of the season, though it shouldn’t have been with so much young talent at the skill positions.
The loss against a divisional rival stung, but the Saints poured it on in the closing seconds when they ran a play to get running back Jamaal Williams a touchdown.

Smith took exception with the play call after the game and had a heated exchange with New Orleans head coach Dennis Smith via CBS.

In the video clip, Smith can be seen walking briskly to Allen and letting him know that he was upset with what happened on the play.
Later on, Allen apologized for the play and revealed that the offensive line wanted to get Williams a touchdown, his first with the Saints that had financial incentives tied to it.
Smith is well within his rights to complain because teams generally would kneel in that situation, but New Orleans opted to run up the score instead.
However, after another disappointing finish, Smith might not be in a position next season to argue such a circumstance.
