The Chicago White Sox have been one of many teams that have been quiet this offseason.
The White Sox seem to be unsure about the direction of their team.
Last season was a disaster for the White Sox.
Before the season they were thought to be AL Central contenders.
But, whatever could have gone wrong for the White Sox did.
They had a plethora of injuries last season and ended with a 61-101 record.
Now it looks like the White Sox are trying to trade one of their best players.
Starting pitcher Dylan Cease appears to be available for trade but the team wants a lot in return.
According to Bob Nightengale, White Sox GM Chris Getz said they have spoken to teams about Cease but nothing is close.
White Sox GM Chris Getz says they have spoken to plenty of teams about trading Dylan Cease, but nothing close at this juncture.
‘If we feel like there’s a there’s a fit that improves our club, we will certainly strongly consider it. Certainly that hasn’t happened at this point.’— Bob Nightengale (@BNightengale) January 9, 2024
Cease is not an unrestricted free agent until the 2026 season.
So if he is traded before the season he will still have two years of control on his contract.
Cease has proven in the past he has the potential to be a Cy Young-caliber pitcher.
In 2022, he finished second in AL Cy Young voting.
Despite having a bad year last year, there is still plenty to like about Cease.
If the White Sox are ready to rebuild their roster, trading Cease for some prospects makes sense.
He will be 28 years old throughout next season.
That is right in the prime of his career.
It would be a surprise if Cease played this entire season as a White Sox.
Both he and the team should be ready to part ways sooner than later.
