The Tennessee Titans joined the groups of teams in search of a new head coach this offseason after Mike Vrabel was fired this week.
It was a bit of a surprising decision given Vrabel’s success there, but not one that didn’t come without merit after he failed to lead the Titans to the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.
But while the Titans could be a solid landing spot for some of the top head coaching candidates, The Athletic’s Dianna Russini reported that Tennessee is not interested in two of the biggest names out there: Michigan Wolverines head coach Jim Harbaugh and former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
Both Jim Harbaugh and Bill Belichick are NOT on the Titans’ candidate list, per source.
The team is open to a coach who specializes on either side of the ball. There is no specific criteria in that regard.— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) January 11, 2024
This seems strange given both Harbaugh and Belichick have previous NFL head coaching experience and both have led teams to Super Bowls.
The only true explanations as to why the Titans wouldn’t want to hire either are because they are too expensive, the team wants to hire a younger candidate or the team wants to hire someone comfortable with a rebuild.
Titans general manager Ran Carthon jettisoned a lot of expensive veteran talent this past offseason and could do so again with players like running back Derrick Henry and quarterback Ryan Tannehill.
Carthon may not want a coach like Harbaugh or Belichick who wants to win as quickly as possible while the Titans are trying to build a long-term future for the franchise.
This limits the team’s options for candidates, but there are certainly a lot of coaches out there perhaps more willing to take the long view on a job rather than the short view.
