Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford returned to Ford Field for the first time since the Detroit Lions traded him away in 2021.
Stafford played 12 years for the Lions and never won a playoff game, but this time the Lions were the ones that beat Stafford after Detroit won in a close 24-23 win over Los Angeles on Sunday night.
Questions about Stafford’s future in the NFL began after he won his first Super Bowl with the Rams in 2021 and injuries continued to mount this past season.
But his wife, Kelly Stafford, all but confirmed that the Rams quarterback will return in 2024.
“Already excited for this Rams team next season,” Stafford wrote on Instagram. “And he will be back next year detroit (sic), but until then, go get you one!!!” (via Ari Meirov).

Stafford’s NFL legacy cannot be told without his time in Detroit, but his departure is what helped set up the Lions to eventually beat him in the playoffs.
Detroit acquired quarterback Jared Goff in the deal with the Rams along with a bevy of draft picks they used to select key pieces like wide receiver Jameson Williams, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, tight end Sam LaPorta, cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu, and defensive linemen Brodric Martin and Josh Paschal.
While the Lions will remain at home for the NFC playoffs, the Rams head into an offseason after a surprising 2023 season.
Stafford played some of his best football this year and the Rams saw quality contributions from a few of their youngest players on offense like wide receiver Puka Nacua and running back Kyren Williams.
