The New Orleans Saints offense has been pretty mediocre since Drew Brees retired.
The team hasn’t been able to capture the same firepower it did for Brees’ 15 seasons in the Big Easy, even with a few different quarterbacks and mostly the same offense.
So after another season where New Orleans missed the playoffs, the Saints decided to make a big coaching change – just not with head coach Dennis Allen.
The team fired longtime offensive coordinator Pete Carmichael, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
A major offensive shakeup: The #Saints are moving on from OC Pete Carmichael, per me and @TomPelissero, changing their offense for the first time since 2009.

This move makes a lot of sense after the team’s inability to find success without Brees and especially after Sean Payton stepped down two seasons ago.
New Orleans had been inconsistent offensively all season with Derek Carr under center.
Injuries played a role as well after the team lost veteran wide receiver Michael Thomas for most of the season, wide receiver Chris Olave was in and out of the lineup, and running back Alvin Kamara missed games at the beginning of the year with a suspension.
Whomever the Saints hire to replace Carmichael will inherit a solid collection of players, but one that needs more direction.
It’s unclear who Allen and the Saints could target with this hire, but it’s clear that some fresh eyes on the team should do New Orleans well after they failed to win the division.
