The San Francisco Giants are hiring longtime manager Dusty Baker as a special assistant to the front office.
He will be working with president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, assisting and helping him make important decisions.
It’s certainly a new role for Baker, who played 19 seasons in MLB, then coached and managed for nearly 35 years.
He won’t be on the field or in the dugout, but his vast experience and knowledge of the game will become assets for the Giants.
Even if San Francisco hasn’t really been consistently good in the last decade, Baker has.
That alone can help: the man knows how to win, and if you don’t believe us, here is an important bit of data by MLB insider Bob Nightengale.
“Winning edge: The Giants have won 90 or more games just once in the last 10 full seasons. Dusty Baker has won at least 90 games in seven consecutive full seasons with three different franchises,” he tweeted.

Those three franchises are the Cincinnati Reds, the Washington Nationals, and the Houston Astros.
When Baker managed them, they were all contenders.
Of course, the analysis is deeper than that: all of them had better roster situations than the Giants have had in recent seasons except for the 2021 outburst.
But still, Baker is a winner and it doesn’t hurt to have him around.
He has experienced just about every situation there is to experience in baseball, good or bad.
He can help establish a winning culture in San Francisco, one in which every player can give the team their best.
