MLB is different from many other leagues as they have no salary cap.
That means teams can spend whatever they want on players but need to pay a tax if they go over certain thresholds.
It is fair to expect that the teams who spend the most money will be in contention.
But, that has not been the case this year.
The top-spending teams all had disappointing seasons, and none of them will be in the playoffs.
According to Bleacher Report, the Mets, Yankees, and Padres have the three highest payrolls in baseball.
Each of those teams will miss the playoffs.

If you are looking for the most disappointing teams in baseball this year, there they are.
The Yankees were on the short list of teams that could win the AL in spring training.
While the Mets and Padres each made big moves in free agency to improve their already good teams.
It is hard to fathom how these teams have been so bad.
But, a lack of production from their key players is a good place to start.
The Yankees got nothing from Carlos Rodon this year after they signed to a six-year contract in the offseason.
The Mets decided to trade Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer at the deadline because they were not in the long-term plans.
As for the Padres, they have the NL Cy Young favorite in Blake Snell and an MVP candidate in Juan Soto.
Their biggest issue was they went 9-28 in one-run games and 1-12 in extra-inning games.
Each of these teams had major problems this year, and not even their monster payrolls could save them.
