The Washington Commanders are looking to provide themselves with the building blocks that could result in them finally having a winning program.
With new ownership, they have something of a clean slate, which includes their head coaching situation after they recently fired Ron Rivera.
They may not end up with a prime coaching candidate such as Jim Harbaugh or Bill Belichick, but they will have the No. 2 pick in April’s draft, which could make them attractive enough for a decent head coach looking for a job.
As for Rivera, he says he wants to continue coaching in the NFL, even if it means being an assistant.
“I have several opportunities right now,” Rivera told ESPN in his first public comments since being fired. “I just want to make sure it’s the right one.”

After the Commanders fired defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio late in the season, Rivera took over the duties of calling defensive plays for the rest of the schedule, something he said he really enjoyed.
Rivera had spent four seasons as their head coach, and during that time, they finished no better than 8-8, something that cannot be fully blamed on him, as they never really had a top-flight quarterback.
But now, they have an opportunity to draft someone who could become one, if that’s how they wish to use their No. 2 overall pick.
They almost certainly won’t get to draft Caleb Williams, but there are a couple of other quarterbacks who should be available and could turn into stars in the NFL.
There is also the opportunity for the Commanders to take Marvin Harrison Jr., the sensational wide receiver from Ohio State University.
