The next era of New England Patriots football is here as Bill Belichick is no longer with the organization.
Belichick’s time with the Patriots ended on a low note as the team missed the postseason, but they rebounded quickly as they hired linebacker coach Jerod Mayo to serve as the franchise’s new head coach.
Mayo was groomed to be Belichick’s successor and now has the challenge of rebuilding the team from the ground up.
New England hasn’t been in the position many times in its history, so Mayo has his work cut out for him as he tries to bring them back to glory.
One of the first things Mayo must do is assemble his own coaching staff for the 2024 NFL season.
Offensive coordinator quickly became a need for Mayo as Bill O’Brien is reportedly leaving to join Ohio State via Pete Thamel of ESPN.
“Ohio State is set to hire longtime NFL head coach Bill O’Brien as the school’s new offensive coordinator. O’Brien served last season as the Patriots’ offensive coordinator in 2023 and has been the head coach at the Texans and in the Big Ten at Penn State,” Thamel reported.

O’Brien’s departure makes sense as he was probably not going to be retained on Mayo’s staff.
The former Houston Texans head coach will now resume the same role he had with the New England with Ohio State.
O’Brien’s track record as a head coach isn’t the best, but he at least brings NFL knowledge back to the collegiate ranks and has an excellent opportunity to prove he is a good playcaller.
