The debate over who is the greatest NFL quarterback of all time has a lot of nuance attached to it when you consider the different eras each played in as well as the different styles of play for each passer.
Another deciding factor is weighing the importance of individual stats and accolades versus championships and postseason success.
Nick Wright, on “First Things First,” attempted to break down his top-15 quarterbacks of all time during the post-1970 NFL-AFL merger into five levels in the shape of a pyramid, starting with a single player at the top:
- Level 1: Tom Brady
- Level 2: Patrick Mahomes and Peyton Manning
- Level 3: Joe Montana, Dan Marino, and John Elway
- Level 4: Aaron Rodgers, Brett Favre, Roger Staubach, and Steve Young
- Level 5: Terry Bradshaw, Kurt Warner, Drew Brees, Troy Aikman, and Lamar Jackson

QBs from 1970-current are eligible. Some notable names that missed the cut: Warren Moon, Big Ben & Jim Kelly. “Lamar Jackson has to be on there.”

Brady at the peak makes sense as he has the most Super Bowls among all quarterbacks in NFL history.
Mahomes and Manning under him is questionable but nevertheless acceptable because of their respective skillsets and personal accolades.
The rest of the list includes multi-time MVPs, Super Bowl champions, historical statistical leaders, Hall-of-Famers and … Jackson?
He is undoubtedly the strangest addition to this list because of his lack of postseason success – although Jackson does have one MVP and will likely earn a second this season.
Jackson could very well win his first Super Bowl this year depending on how well the Baltimore Ravens play this week.
So while Jackson’s inclusion is a bit controversial, perhaps it’s a bit prophetic as well considering how he’s looked during his short NFL career.
