Jim Harbaugh is back in the NFL after he agreed to join the Los Angeles Chargers as the team’s next head coach this week.
Fortunately for Harbaugh, his learning curve will be much shorter considering his previous experience as a head coach – both in college and in the NFL.
He spent a decade at Michigan after he mutually parted ways with the San Francisco 49ers in 2014 following four successful seasons that included a Super Bowl appearance.
So compared with the rest of the head coaches in the NFL, Fox Sports analyst Colin Cowherd said he believes Harbaugh is already among the best in the league.
“Jim Harbaugh enters the NFL again as a top-four or five head coach,” Cowherd said. “… And when you combine a top-five or six coach with a top-five or six quarterback talent, you win and you win quickly.”

The quarterback Cowherd is referring to is Justin Herbert, who has been one of the better passers in the NFL since the Chargers drafted him in 2020.
Injuries, inconsistent play design, and a turnstile at head coach have stunted Herbert’s early-career development, but Harbaugh could change that after he turned around Alex Smith’s career during his brief tenure with the 49ers.
The pairing of Harbaugh and Herbert will be at the forefront of the Chargers’ 2024 aspirations, but there are more issues to solve on this team if they want to rebound after a horrid 2023 season.
The defense looked bad and there are major salary cap issues to fix before this team can compete to win the AFC West with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Harbaugh will have a lot on his plate.
