The San Francisco 49ers are back in the NFC championship game for the third consecutive season and the second consecutive season with Brock Purdy under center.
The team couldn’t get it done this past season, though, after Purdy suffered an elbow injury early in the contest.
But even if Purdy remains healthy, there is skepticism that he can take the 49ers to the Super Bowl after how poorly he played at times in San Francisco’s close divisional-round win over the Green Bay Packers a week ago.
Even though he led the 49ers to victory, Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright said he believes San Francisco could look elsewhere at quarterback in 2024 if Purdy doesn’t win this weekend against the Detroit Lions.
“If Brock Purdy plays the way he did against Green Bay, and they lose [to the Lions in the NFC championship game], it is absolutely on the board that he’s not their starting quarterback Week 1 of next year,” Wright said. “What the Niners will do if Purdy plays poorly and they lose is try to quietly do recon on Kirk Cousins.”

This would be a bold move for San Francisco considering how cheap Purdy still is as a seventh-round rookie and how expensive Cousins would be as their starter.
But it might be necessary if the 49ers want to win a Super Bowl with this team under head coach Kyle Shanahan.
They couldn’t do it with Jimmy Garoppolo, didn’t get to see what they could with Trey Lance, and are now on Season 2 with Purdy.
How he plays this weekend could determine Purdy’s viability as a starter for the 49ers moving forward.
