The Los Angeles Chargers found their next head coach after the team hired former Michigan Wolverines and San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh this week.
The decision made sense for a lot of reasons, namely because of how it affects Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.
The Chargers made Herbert one of the highest-paid quarterbacks this past offseason but failed to provide him with a team or a head coach who could utilize his skills properly.
That, and a season-ending finger injury tanked his 2023 season
But with Harbaugh now in charge, NFL analyst Dan Patrick said on his radio show that he believes it’s now up to Herbert to play better than he has in recent years.
“They made the best hire that they could possibly make,” Patrick said. “… But I think Justin Herbert now is on the clock. … Now we want to see are you taking that next step up with some of these big boys there.”

Harbaugh’s presence elevated the play of Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick during his four years in San Francisco a decade ago, and he turned Michigan into a perennial contender before winning a national championship this past season.
Herbert would be the best quarterback Harbaugh’s worked with, though, so more questions could emerge about Herbert if he can’t take his game to the next level with a new head coach in 2024 and beyond.
The Chargers will have to make more roster moves as well, though, before an accurate assessment can be made about Herbert’s future in the NFL.
