Joe Flacco turned back the clock in 2023 when he took over as the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback at the end of the season and led them to the playoffs.
While Flacco couldn’t deliver a Super Bowl as he did once with the Baltimore Ravens, he showed that he can still play well in the NFL despite being a few years removed from being a top-tier quarterback.
His future is uncertain, though, with Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson expected to return fully healthy in 2024.
But Flacco doesn’t sound like someone willing to take a backup role, despite what many believe about sitting on the bench in the NFL.
“Everybody probably from the outside looks at backup quarterbacks like, ‘Man that’s a pretty good job. You get to make a couple million dollars a year sitting on the bench,’” Flacco said on “The Dan Patrick Show” this week. “… It’s not a good job, man. It sucks. It is miserable. You want to be playing.”

Flacco just turned 39 years old, so he’s closer to the end of his career than the beginning.
But if a team is looking for a quality veteran with plenty of experience, Flacco showed he can still throw the rock at an elite level with a good offensive line in front of him and quality weapons around him.
It’s unclear if there are any teams who would be interested in his services, though, considering how so many teams look for younger talent under center.
Flacco can still play, but it would take a perfect situation – like the one he had in Cleveland – for him to return as a starter in the NFL.
