The Detroit Tigers might be on the verge of competing.
They have several interesting, talented young pitchers like Tarik Skubal, Reese Olson, Matt Manning, Casey Mize, Joey Wentz, and Alex Faedo; and added two solid veterans in the offseason in Jack Flaherty and Kenta Maeda.
Their group of position players still needs a talent injection, but they do have the promising Colt Keith and Spencer Torkelson, plus the acquisition of Mark Canha and the dependable Kerry Carpenter.
You can go ahead and add another highly promising name to that lineup: Riley Greene.
Greene is projected to have a breakout season in 2024, and if the Tigers are going to compete at some point this year or next, they need it to happen.
MLB shared a graphic on Twitter with Greene’s 2024 projections.

After missing most of 2022 with an injury, Greene had a strong 2023 campaign in which he hit .288/.349/.447 with 11 home runs and seven stolen bases.
FanGraphs is projecting him to top those stats in 2024.
They have him hitting 18 home runs and 29 doubles, with a solid .343 on-base percentage and a .782 OPS.
He was able to produce 2.3 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) in just 99 games last year.
If he stays healthy and his play matches or exceeds those FanGraphs projections, we could be looking at a 4.0-WAR player, which would be a fine outcome for Greene and the Tigers.
Greene has some power, speed, and the ability to work walks.
He certainly needs to cut his strikeouts down a bit (114 in just 99 games in 2023), but he impacts the game in several areas and represents the present and the future of the Tigers.
