San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey has always been a fine player, but this season, he has taken things to a level that few players have ever gotten to.
During the regular season, he ran for 14 touchdowns and an NFL-high 1,459 yards while adding 564 yards and seven touchdowns through the air, giving him more yards (2,023) and touchdowns (21) from scrimmage than anyone else this year.
He has continued to shine brightly in the playoffs with 98 rushing yards in the divisional round versus the Green Bay Packers and 90 rushing yards in Sunday’s NFC Championship Game against the Detroit Lions, plus a total of four touchdowns in the two contests.
With the 49ers’ come-from-behind win over Detroit on Sunday, McCaffrey has joined Emmitt Smith, Terrell Davis, and Marshall Faulk as the only NFL players to ever reach the Super Bowl in the same season they had at least 2,000 scrimmage yards and 20 touchdowns, per NFL on CBS.

Just four seasons ago, the tailback became just the third player in league history to have at least 1,000 rushing and receiving yards in the same season, joining Faulk and former 49ers star Roger Craig.
However, McCaffrey did so while playing on a bad Carolina Panthers team, making what he has done this year seem a lot more meaningful.
San Francisco acquired him midway through the 2022 campaign, and while they had already been a good team for a few years, his arrival transformed them into a legitimate powerhouse.
They will take on the Kansas City Chiefs in a rematch of Super Bowl LIV on February 11 with the Vince Lombardi Trophy at stake, and that trophy would be quite the topper for McCaffrey’s sensational year.
