The Detroit Lions have come a long way.
This is a team that finished the 2021 season with a 3-13-1 record, and in 2023, made it to the NFC Championship game.
While they were unable to get the job done, many fans commended the way that Dan Campbell was able to turn this team around so quickly.
However, even though there was a lot of celebration regarding Campbell and the cultural shift he was a part of, he has also faced some criticism.
There were several moments during the NFC Championship game that fans wish they could have back, including Campbell’s decisions to go for it on fourth down several times, rather than attempting a field goal.
He has doubled down on those decisions in several interviews, not showing remorse for making the calls.
In a recent conversation shared by MLive.com via Pro Football Talk, however, Campbell did acknowledge a mistake in calling a running play instead of a pass when the Lions had third-and-goal late in the game.
Campbell acknowledged that an incomplete pass would have preserved their timeout if they weren’t going to score a touchdown.
When referencing the timeout he had to blow because of this, Campbell said, “I believed in the moment that it was going to be a walk-and-run, but it didn’t work out.”

He added, “So, I gambled and lost.”
Campbell is viewed as a great coach, for the most part.
He has brought the city of Detroit so much joy during his tenure as head coach, and the team has won a lot because of him.
The city seems to be in love with Campbell, and even though his decision-making might have cost the team this game, the fanbase is ready to root for him and the team again in 2024.
