The Dallas Cowboys had to make a tough decision about Ezekiel Elliott.
The former first-round pick stopped being one of the best running backs in the league years ago, and with all the money he was due, it was a no-brainer to let him go.
Still, he left the franchise as their sixth all-time leading rusher, not to mention the fact that he was widely beloved and respected in the locker room.
That’s why they honored him with a homecoming and heartwarming tribute video when the New England Patriots visited Arlington.
Needless to say, as usually happens with this kind of stuff, that led to mixed comments and hot takes on social media (via Jon Machota).
Felt wrong having to send the boys on the hunt on Zeke, but once the Star isn’t on the helmet, it’s business, thanks for the memories though Zeke

Why? He had like 3 good years. He’s a Patriot now. He’s the enemy now.

I still don’t fully understand why we let him go

The man deserves all the love and then some

He could’ve been great, money made him lazy but man he made that 2016 season amazing to watch #feedzeke

Zeke was always a controversial figure.
His efficiency took a massive dip, and he had some struggles to hold onto the football a couple of years ago.
But he was still a great blocker and a monster near the goal line, and it feels like the Cowboys could’ve worked something out with him if they wanted.
Elliott was reportedly willing to take a pay cut if that was what it took to stay with the team, but they didn’t make him an offer.
Running backs have become more expendable and disposable as the years go by.
Teams would rather use a late-round pick on a younger running back than re-sign an aging star, as they might not have many miles left in them.
It’s a cruel and ruthless business, but at least Elliott managed to cash in big time when he had the chance.
