A lot of the New York Jets’ issues in 2023 can be boiled down to their quarterback.
The team entered the year with a lot of hope as Aaron Rodgers was poised to take over for Zach Wilson, but Rodgers’ Week 1 Achilles tear left Wilson as the only viable starter once more.
Wilson flopped – much like he did in his first two years with the team – which led the Jets to move on to even worse backup options before they reverted back to Wilson midway through the season.
Fans criticized the team on social media all year, and Jets owner Woody Johnson reportedly forwarded those concerns to head coach Robert Saleh, according to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini and Zack Rosenblatt.
“According to team sources, Johnson often shared those opinions with coach Robert Saleh in conversations about what wasn’t working on offense,” The Athletic reported.
Owner Woody Johnson is known for being active on Twitter, consuming criticism from fans and media alike.

Johnson’s concern with fan opinions is both refreshing and shocking for an NFL team.
The Jets organization has a lot more information than most fans, and therefore can make informed decisions on perceived issues.
But Johnson’s interest in what the Jets fans think means he himself acknowledged the very public-facing issues that faced the Jets in 2023, whether that be issues on offense or losing games in bad ways to just overall ineptitude.
As the owner of the team, Johnson very clearly cares about the perception of his organization and wanted his head coach to know that for when Saleh has to make tough choices this offseason.
Whether or not Saleh takes fan critiques into consideration could affect his job status as the rest of the season goes down in 2024, though.
