The San Diego Padres keep signing quality relievers to try and fill the void Josh Hader left when he went to the Houston Astros on a $95 million deal.
They have brought in Luis Patiño, Woo Suk Go, Yuki Matsui, and Enyel De Los Santos.
On Wednesday, they announced the arrival of another competent reliever: Wandy Peralta.
The left-hander, who had spent the last few years with the New York Yankees, signed a four-year deal worth $16.5 million.
It’s a contract that could potentially benefit both sides.
The Padres get a quality left-hander for their bullpen, with a career 3.88 ERA and a 2.83 ERA in 2023.
Peralta has a rock-solid changeup and gets a high number of groundballs.
They get him for an average salary of just over $4 million per year for the next four campaigns.
Now, according to MLB insider Jon Heyman, Peralta has the ability to control his future thanks to the deal he signed.

His agency achieved three opt-out clauses in the contract: one after 2024, one after 2025, and one after 2026.
If Peralta has a bad year or gets injured, he can always opt into his deal and guarantee $4.125 million for 2025.
If he performs at an All-Star level, he gets the chance to opt out of the pact and look for more money (or years) in the market.
The southpaw is still in the peak of his abilities at 32, but did very good for himself and his family and has the ability to increase his earnings and salary next year with solid performance.
