It is truly the start of a new era for the New England Patriots, as Bill Belichick recently left after being their head coach for 24 seasons, most of which were successful and even glorious.
Instead of hiring a big name to replace Belichick, they went with Jerod Mayo, who played eight seasons for Belichick and became an assistant coach under him in 2019 three years after retiring as a player.
On Thursday, the team announced on its official Twitter account its coordinators for the 2024 season: Alex Van Pelt, DeMarcus Covington, and Jeremy Springer.

Van Pelt, New England’s new offensive coordinator, played 11 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback, and afterward, he spent several seasons as a quarterbacks coach for the Buffalo Bills, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Green Bay Packers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Cleveland Browns, while also serving as the Browns’ offensive coordinator since 2020.
Covington was an assistant coach for several seasons in the college ranks before coming to the Patriots in 2017, first as a coaching assistant and then as an outside linebackers coach and later a defensive line coach.
He will now be Mayo’s defensive coordinator starting this fall.
Springer also spent several years as a college assistant coach, and he spent the last two years as the Los Angeles Rams’ assistant special teams coach.
The Patriots have tons of work to do in order to merely make the playoffs again, starting with the quarterback position, where 2021 first-round draft pick Mac Jones has thus far failed to measure up.
They will have the No. 3 pick in this year’s draft, and they could go several ways with that pick.
