The Washington Commanders have a new head coach in former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.
This was the final head coaching hire of this offseason’s cycle, even as high-profile names like Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, and Pete Carroll remain available.
So while some have lauded the Commanders for bringing in an experienced leader who’s also been a head coach in the past, former Washington and two-time Super Bowl-winning offensive lineman Mark May did not like the hire.
“They sat on their hands,” May said, via 7News DC’s Scott Abraham. “And look what they ended up with: The bottom of the heap.”

To say Quinn is the “bottom of the heap” is a bit overdramatic considering he was a head coaching candidate in 2022 and was reportedly a finalist for other jobs this offseason as well.
But the point stands that there were more successful options out there who had more recently been head coaches, like Belichick, Vrabel, and Carroll, who are also all defensive-minded coaches.
The other issue is that perhaps the Commanders were focused on younger candidates like Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik before both decided to withdraw their names and return to their respective clubs – leaving Washington with really only Quinn left to hire.
Regardless, Quinn does bring a good amount of experience to Washington after he coached the Atlanta Falcons for six seasons from 2015 to 2020, including a Super Bowl berth in 2016.
He’ll be working with the No. 2 overall pick as well with three quality quarterbacks at the top of the draft this spring.
