The Las Vegas Raiders thought they had their guy, but that wasn’t the case.
All of a sudden, Kliff Kingsbury withdrew himself from their offensive coordinator job, and it didn’t take long before he struck a deal with the Washington Commanders instead.
With that in mind, plenty of people thought the Commanders lured him away because they offered him a chance to work with USC star QB Caleb Williams again, as they had worked together in college.
And while that could be a part of the reason why he chose them, NFL insider Adam Schefter recently revealed that there was much more to it.
Talking on “The Pat McAfee Show,” the renowned NFL insider reported that the Raiders were against offering him a third year in his contract, which the Commanders were more than happy to do.
“It was a contractual dispute between Kliff Kingsbury and the Las Vegas Raiders..
I think the Raiders were offering a two year deal and Washington was more than happy to offer that third year” ~ @AdamSchefter #PMSLive pic.twitter.com/tYJuBTOinJ

At the end of the day, that contract dispute ended up shifting the scale in favor of the Commanders, so it became an easy decision for Kingsbury to join forces with Dan Quinn.
The Commanders had one of the worst offenses in the league last season, and with Eric Bieniemy not even drawing any sort of interest to become their head coach, it was far from shocking to see them being uber-aggressive to find him a suitable replacement.
Kingsbury didn’t find much success as a head coach, but his job as an offensive mind has never been in doubt, and it’ll be interesting to see what he’s able to do in the capital.
