Since taking over as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback in Week 13 of last season, Brock Purdy has become one of the NFL’s best stories in recent memory.
This season, he was at or near the top of the league in most statistical categories having to do with passing, and he has led the 49ers to the Super Bowl after two come-from-behind wins to start the playoffs.
Purdy has objectively answered almost all questions about whether he’s a legitimate franchise quarterback, but plenty in the national media still refuse to give him his due.
Joy Taylor spelled out on FS1’s “Speak” what Purdy will have to do in Super Bowl LVIII this Sunday in order to be universally considered an elite QB.
“I think he has to play at a high level for the entirety of the game. If he can show that he belongs on the same field as Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs, we’re gonna walk away from this feeling how we felt about Jalen Hurts last year,” Taylor said.

Against the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship Game, Purdy was lackluster in the first half as the 49ers fell behind by 17 points, but he was nearly flawless afterward as he led his team to a 34-31 victory.
In that second half, he completed 13 of 16 pass attempts for 174 yards and a 132.8 passer rating.
He not only did a masterful job of running San Francisco’s offense, but he also accumulated 48 rushing yards, which surprised some people, as it is something that isn’t really on the scouting report.
In last season’s Super Bowl, Hurts’ Philadelphia Eagles blew a 10-point halftime lead and lost to the Chiefs, but he played very well, and it served as an affirmation of what he did in the regular season when he was the runner-up to Mahomes in the MVP balloting.
Another strong performance from Purdy, especially if it comes in a win over Mahomes and the Chiefs, could erase the disrespect he has been getting for good.
