The free-agent market still presents teams with some premier players as we head to spring training.
It is shocking that Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, Blake Snell, Jordan Montgomery, and J.D. Martinez haven’t signed to this point.
Teams are negotiating for all of them, though.
When it comes to Martinez, he is an excellent choice for those who need offense and are willing to ignore defense (and his age).
MLB insider Jon Morosi sees the New York Mets as a potential fit.
“‘To me, the Mets are as likely as anyone else to sign J.D. Martinez.’ @jonmorosi shares his thoughts on the Mets’ reported interest for the free agent slugger, and one other team to keep an eye out for,” MLB Network tweeted.

He warns, however, that “he would be stunned if the Cubs didn’t get one of them” (Bellinger, Martinez, and Chapman).
As Morosi states, the Mets aren’t going all-in to win the 2024 World Series, but they want to be competitive.
That means they could sign the 36-year-old Martinez, who had an incredible 33 home runs last year with the Los Angeles Dodgers in just 113 games.
Making that move gives the Mets choices and options ahead of the deadline.
If they are in contention, they could keep Martinez and pair him with Pete Alonso, Francisco Lindor, Brandon Nimmo, Starling Marte, Francisco Alvarez, and others to keep the lineup strong and go for the playoffs.
If they are out of it, they can flip him to a contender for prospects.
It’s something that would benefit their club one way or another.
They do have competition for Martinez, though.
