The Baltimore Ravens were so close to getting back to the Super Bowl.
They were favored against the Kansas City Chiefs, were playing at home, and had the soon-to-be MVP in their ranks.
That’s why, as honored as Lamar Jackson was about getting the award for the second time in his career, he got brutally honest during the ceremony, stating that he would rather be playing in the big game (via Mark Maske).
“Just to get this award, to be here for the award, it’s an honor. But I’d rather be playing in the Super Bowl than accepting an award,” he said.

Jackson wasn’t the most impressive player on the field from a numbers perspective, but he was the best player on the best team in the regular season.
He rose to the occasion every single time he had to face a winning or playoff-caliber team in the regular season, and it looked like he was finally ready to get over the hump.
Then, both himself and Todd Monken went away from their identity and what had worked for them during the regular season, which eventually cost them a Super Bowl ticket.
Now, all the narrative around him has changed.
The Ravens haven’t been able to get back to the Super Bowl since the Joe Flacco era, and analysts already doubted Jackson’s ability to lead the team to the final game of the season with his style of play.
Still, he looked more comfortable than ever this season, and he’s clearly made great strides as a pocket passer.
Hopefully, he’ll get another chance to get the monkey off his back and win the Vince Lombardi trophy.
