Recently, former NFL quarterback Cam Newton made a statement that San Francisco quarterback Brock Purdy is a “game manager.”
Ever since his comment, there has been a host of heated responses from media types, mainly disagreeing with Newton.
On Friday, Donovan McNabb, who played quarterback prominently with the Philadelphia Eagles and led the franchise to Super Bowl XXXIX, was asked his opinion on the hot take.
“We’re all game managers. But some people are game-breakers,” commented McNabb. “And so people don’t understand, you’re all game managers. What you do in this system is what you do in that system. But, can you be a game-breaker? No, there are only, maybe just a handful of game-breakers.”

When McNabb was asked what he sees in Purdy when he executes his play in Kyle Shanahan’s offensive system, the ex-quarterback urged patience.
“Brock is continuing to grow. He’s only in his second season. Everybody’s got to be patient. There’s a lot of success early on right now, but the thing about Brock is Brock just continues to play. He’s continuing to play and learn. I love watching Brock.”
As most people are aware, Purdy was the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, earning him the title “Mr. Irrelevant.”
In just two seasons with the 49ers, he has clearly become relevant.
This season, Purdy made his first Pro Bowl and was the NFL’s passer rating leader.
Some media talking heads have stated that Purdy is succeeding only because San Fran is loaded with playmakers on the offensive side of the ball, making it a cakewalk for the second-year player.
His performance in Super Bowl LVIII will certainly help determine if Purdy is a “game manager” or not.
