During the NFL Honors ceremony this past Thursday, this year’s class of inductees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame were revealed.
The 2024 class includes Dwight Freeney, Julius Peppers, Andre Johnson, Devin Hester, Patrick Willis, Randy Gradishar, and Steve McMichael.
That’s an impressive class, but there were a number of other former NFL players that were surprisingly passed over for the Hall of Fame this year, including former Los Angeles Chargers All-Pro tight end Antonio Gates.
This was Gates’ first year on the ballot, and most assumed he was going to get his gold jacket from the Hall of Fame immediately, but he’ll have to wait at least another year before that happens.
Former Dallas Cowboys legendary wide receiver Michael Irvin is among the group of people who were surprised to find out that Gates didn’t get the Hall of Fame nod this year.
Irvin recently shared some advice with the former Chargers tight end (via TMZ on Twitter).
“Don’t let [this decision] rob you when your time comes. Don’t be so angry you didn’t get it when you wanted it, that when you do get it, you can’t even appreciate it.”

Irvin mentioned how he also was not voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame during his first time on the ballot despite the fact that he had a very accomplished NFL career that included helping the Dallas Cowboys win three Super Bowls.
Gates was never a part of a Super Bowl-winning roster, but he still accomplished a lot during his pro football career, one that included eight trips to the Pro Bowl and three First-Team All-Pro selections.
It’s disappointing that he didn’t get the nod for the Hall of Fame this year, but he shouldn’t have to wait too much longer to get his gold jacket from Canton.
