The Denver Broncos stared at the possibility of starting the 2023 NFL season at 0-4.
Instead, Russell Wilson and the team rallied from 21 points down to defeat the Chicago Bears.
That’s the only bright spot the team could find through their first four assignments.
Likewise, it was easy to blame their quarterback, especially when he was given a five-year, $245 million contract extension.
However, Colin Cowherd doesn’t see Wilson as the sole reason for the Broncos’ mediocrity over their last 21 games.
He pointed out that Nathaniel Hackett was a terrible head coach and a struggling offensive coordinator who got lifted by Aaron Rodgers.
Then there’s Wilson, who Cowherd thinks is a reason behind Denver’s woes, but not because he’s washed.
“That’s the Russell Wilson issue. He’s aged, he’s not washed… He does not have the juice he’s had in previous seasons,” Cowherd said in a recent episode of The Herd.

The FS1 host made that comment after reacting to a tweet by StatMuse.
The tweet revealed that Russell Wilson has more touchdown passes than Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Justin Herbert.
He also has fewer interceptions than Tua Tagovailoa, Jared Goff, and Josh Allen.
However, Cowherd sees the issue with Wilson’s performance corresponding to his massive contract extension, which will start next season.
As he’s aged, is he still a quarterback worthy of an average salary of over $49 million annually?
If that’s the case, is he competitive enough against top quarterbacks like Mahomes, Herbert, Lamar Jackson, and other top QBs?
That’s the issue Cowherd sees, and the Broncos have no escape plan.
