Almost a year ago, in March 2023, Team Puerto Rico earned a crucial win against the Dominican Republic in the 2023 World Baseball Classic.
What should have been a glorious day for Edwin Diaz turned out to be a nightmare.
During the celebrations, the New York Mets closer injured his knee, and it was bad: a right patellar tendon tear.
He needed surgery and missed the whole 2023 campaign with the Mets.
Diaz has overcome every obstacle in the way and is now ready to rock.
He has been active in Mets camp, throwing bullpens and looking excellent.
In the last few hours, he faced live hitters, and SNY Mets has the video:

The velocity looks all the way back.
The command is still a work in progress, but it’s sure nice to see Diaz using his full arsenal and working against live competition.
He will have no restrictions during spring training and should be ready to start the 2024 season as the Mets’ closer.
He has already stated he will keep using “Narco” as his entrance song, so the trumpets are guaranteed this year at Citi Field.
To say the Mets missed Diaz last year would be an understatement.
The bullpen was never steady, and it’s easy to see why: they missed their best pitcher.
Diaz, in case you don’t remember, tossed 62 innings of a 1.31 ERA and 118 strikeouts in 2022.
His 0.84 WHIP that year was equally dominant, and he conceded nine earned runs all year.
That’s what the Mets missed: arguably the nastiest reliever in baseball.
That player is ready to return to the mound in 2024.
