The San Francisco 49ers were a half away from winning Super Bowl LVIII, but special teams miscues and poor offensive execution cost them a championship.
Instead, the 49ers had to sit on the sidelines and watch the Kansas City Chiefs celebrate their second title in a row, a gut punch for the organization and it’s fans.
San Francisco had complete control of the game in the first half as they held Kansas City scoreless until late in the second quarter.
The 49ers saw the game slip out of their hands in overtime when they were forced to settle for a field goal in the extra period’s first possession.
The Chiefs took advantage and scored a touchdown on the ensuing play, ending the game and giving them the Lombardi Trophy.
During the NBA All-Star Celebrity Game, Richard Jefferson couldn’t help but troll San Francisco’s decision to take possession first in overtime via ESPN.
“If you don’t know the rules, it can be very detrimental. Just ask the 49ers,” Jefferson said.

Several players on the 49ers’ roster also admitted they were unaware of the new playoff overtime rules where each team gets a chance to possess the football.
The old overtime rules used to state that if a team scored on the first possession they would win the game, essentially making it an advantage.
In this case, it seems that the 49ers weren’t prepared for the possibility of going back on defense and getting a stop which ultimately led to their downfall.
