The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may have found their quarterback for the future, or so they hope at least.
Baker Mayfield is coming off the best season of his career, and he played his way into a very lucrative deal in the offseason.
Nonetheless, as much as the Bucs are building their offensive staff around the possibility of keeping Mayfield for the long run, NFL writer Jeremy Fowler believes another team could join the race to sign him.
Fowler shared his thoughts alongside a panel of NFL experts from ESPN, stating that the New England Patriots could also be in play for the former No. 1 pick.
“The Patriots’ new brain trust — including lead personnel man Eliot Wolf and personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith — were part of the Cleveland regime that took Mayfield No. 1 in the 2018 draft. They believed in him,” Fowler stated.
He points out the fact that both lead personnel man Eliot Wolf and personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith were in Cleveland when they took him in the NFL Draft, and they’re now in Foxboro.
They both believed in him and liked him, so even if they take Drake Maye or any other quarterback with the No. 3 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, they could still consider adding a veteran by his side.
He also says they could look to add star WR Marvin Harrison Jr. with the No. 3 selection or even trade back to get more assets if they think Mayfield could be a long-term solution at the QB position.
Whatever the case, all signs point at this being the end of the Mac Jones era in Foxboro.
