Throughout the course of NFL history, we’ve seen multiple elite coordinators and assistant coaches find little to no success as head coaches.
That was the case with Steve Spagnuolo, who was the architect behind a championship-caliber defense with the New York Giants but struggled mightily during his lone stint as the main guy with the Los Angeles (then St. Louis) Rams.
Spagnoulo logged a 10-38 record in three years as a head coach before pivoting back to being a defensive coordinator.
Fast forward to today, and he’s officially the most successful top assistant in NFL history, winning four Super Bowls as a defensive coordinator.
Even so, he recently acknowledged that he would like to have another chance to call the shots (via ProFootballTalk).
Talking on Mad Dog Radio, the Kansas City Chiefs defensive coordinator stated that he’s a blessed man and likes what he does right now, but he wouldn’t hesitate to take another head coaching opportunity if it became available:
“I’ve been asked this question a lot, I’ll answer it the same way,” Spagnuolo said. “Absolutely would want to. We’re prideful guys in this business.”

Notably, despite his success, he hasn’t been mentioned in many head coaching searches over the years.
The Chiefs will hope that stays this way.
They’re looking to become the first team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, and Spagnuolo’s defense was the main reason why they were able to go back-to-back this season.
Spagnuolo is finally getting his flowers and the praise and recognition he deserves, and it remains to be seen if that will translate to another shot to be the main guy in the future, perhaps even in Kansas City once Andy Reid retires.
