Just one year ago, it seemed like the Houston Texans had found a legitimate steal in the fourth round.
RB Dameon Pierce was just shy of a 1,000-yard rookie season, and he was a strong NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year candidate before his campaign was cut short by injuries.
His second season, however, was far from impressive.
He struggled to find any sort of space, often running into offensive linemen and defenders before running lanes could even develop.
And while some of that might have to do with the Texans’ struggling offensive line, backup Devin Singletary was far more efficient in the running and passing game, so it wasn’t a matter of design.
Now, it seems like Pierce could lose his job altogether.
According to a report by ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Texans could look to make a run at Saquon Barkley or Derrick Henry in free agency (via JPA Football).

Henry knows the division like the back of his hand, but Tennessee Titans fans might never forgive him for joining a divisional rival.
He has always talked about his desire to stay with the organization for the remainder of his career, but he also hinted at leaving late last season.
As for Barkley, the New York Giants have been reluctant to sign him to a long-term deal, and he could walk away if they don’t place him under the franchise tag again.
Whatever the case, both would be a significant upgrade and a prime weapon for C.J. Stroud.
