The Boston Red Sox haven’t been very good since winning the 2018 World Series.
An appearance in the 2021 American League Championship Series seems like the outlier in a series of disappointing seasons.
Even in the tough years, they have found a number of reliable contributors.
The best and most consistent of them all is, without a doubt, third baseman Rafael Devers.
He is the face of the franchise.
Well, his nickname is somewhat related to that situation, and manager Alex Cora explains it:
“Alex Cora on Rafael Devers: ‘I know he hates to be called the face of the franchise. Just call him the carita (baby face) of the franchise,’” Red Sox insider Chris Cotillo tweeted.

Apparently, Devers doesn’t like when people call him the face of the franchise so his teammates now call him “carita.”
It might also have something to do with the fact he has a baby face.
Make no mistake, though: he hits like a grown man.
Last year, for example, he hit 33 home runs, drove in 100 runs, and had an .851 OPS.
He is a doubles and home-run machine, and has a career .853 OPS.
Devers has also taken a leadership role in the clubhouse.
On Tuesday, for example, he made it clear that he is disappointed that the front office didn’t do more to improve the roster in the offseason and before last year’s trade deadline, per Jen McCaffrey.

At the moment, the Red Sox are looking like the worst team in the American League East, and while that doesn’t necessarily mean they are bad, their playoff chances are not as high as fans would like.
As long as they have Devers, they have a chance, but it’s clear they need more than Lucas Giolito, Liam Hendriks, Tyler O’Neill, and Vaughn Grissom.
