The Dallas Cowboys have a tough decision to make this offseason.
Yet when it comes to the contract of quarterback Dak Prescott, there is only one logical thing they can do.
That is extend him to a long-term deal.
Prescott is expected to count $59.4 million against the cap in 2024.
That cap hit is unsustainable if the Cowboys want to put a good roster around Prescott.
So, what they need to do is extend his contract and that will lower his cap hit for 2024.
That way Dallas can build a championship-level roster around their quarterback.
Many Cowboys fans are uncertain about Prescott making top-of-the-market money.
Some even want him to take a pay cut.
According to Ed Werder, Prescott has all the leverage and he will get the best deal possible.
Regarding the suggestion Dak Prescott should accept a team-friendly contract, keep in mind the Cowboys never franchise-tagged a QB – until Jerry and Stephen twice used it on Prescott.
They used their leverage. Now he should be expected to use his.

As Werder said, the Cowboys already used the franchise tag twice on Prescott.
Even though him taking less money would help the Cowboys, that is not a smart business move.
Plus, the Cowboys have plenty of other ways to create cap space once Prescott gets his extension.
He is coming off the best year of his career.
He was second-team All-Pro and finished second in NFL MVP voting.
After a season like that, Prescott should be able to command whatever he wants in free agency.
The lack of playoff success is why people still doubt him.
But the Cowboys can do a lot worse at quarterback than an All-Pro.
