The Miami Dolphins made a somewhat surprising move on Friday when they announced they will release star cornerback Xavien Howard.
Howard, 30, has made the Pro Bowl four times and has been named to the All-Pro First-Team once in his eight seasons in the NFL, and he seems to have plenty left in the tank.
There should be plenty of interest in him on the free-agent market, and ESPN’s DJ Bien-Aime tweeted that Howard has interest in joining the Houston Texans.
From people I trust Xavien Howard has interest in joining the Texans. He’s from Houston.
From the Texans side it’s TBD. https://t.co/uaBfupbqJp

Howard is originally from Houston, and he played his college ball at Baylor University in Waco, Texas.
His best season thus far came in 2020 when he led the NFL with 20 passes defended and 10 interceptions, which earned him his lone All-Pro First-Team nod that year.
The Texans weren’t expected to do much in 2023, but behind the outstanding play of rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud, they became a surprise team.
They went 10-7, which was the best record in the AFC South, and in the playoffs, they trounced the Cleveland Browns, 45-14, in the Wild Card round.
While Houston has what looks like a very potent offense, they could use some help on defense, particularly at the cornerback position, and Howard could fit the bill.
They should have plenty of salary cap space, and they will be aided by the fact that the salary cap for the 2024 season will be significantly higher than expected.
Howard could be the type of player who would help the Texans take the next step toward Super Bowl contention — a stratosphere they have never been to.
