After another disappointing season, the Denver Broncos are poised to end the Russell Wilson experiment.
The Broncos made a blockbuster trade to bring in Wilson to solve their quarterback issues, but instead they got a dud as he failed to live up to the lofty expectations.
Even after hiring Sean Payton to take over as head coach, he wasn’t able to get Wilson back to MVP form and thus the two sides are destined to part.
Denver could release Wilson at any point, though they’ll still be on the hook for the guaranteed money on his contract.
Despite that, a move seems for the best as the Broncos benched him toward the end of the regular season after his poor play cost them several wins.
There are several directions the franchise could go in after releasing Wilson, via Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.
“Well, they have Jarrett Stidham in the fold, a quarterback that they do like. They can draft one early, Sean Payton can try to get his guy there. And I wouldn’t be surprised if they were active in free agency,” Fowler said.
Stidham had some flashes after he took over for Wilson, but the most likely route is they bring in someone new via the draft or free agency.
The Broncos have the No. 12 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft and would be in range of prospects like J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr.
Denver could also go the veteran quarterback route and pick up someone like Baker Mayfield or Ryan Tannehill.
Regardless, the Broncos will have someone new under center for the 2024 NFL season.
