The NFL Draft Combine is getting underway in Indianapolis soon, and it is an opportunity for every team to take a close look at the incoming rookies in this year’s draft class.
Teams will get a look at players as they go through drills, measurements, and an interview process, and it will provide a revealing analysis of how these players may do at the next level.
However, not every head coach will make the trip to Indianapolis, and the San Francisco 49ers’ Kyle Shanahan is one of those coaches who won’t be at the combine, per ProFootballTalk.

He will be sticking around in California to interview potential defensive coordinators after the 49ers fired Steve Wilks days after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVIII.
Although they still ranked among the NFL’s best in a number of defensive categories, their defense clearly slipped, and it got exposed in the playoffs in a number of ways.
The league’s salary cap is going up by a bigger margin than expected, but San Francisco still needs to use the draft to their advantage, as it may be next to impossible for them to keep all of their key players past the 2024 season.
Star wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is due for a contract extension, and quarterback Brock Purdy will need one of his own within a year or two.
Fortunately, Shanahan and executive John Lynch, with a couple of exceptions, have been drafting well over the last several years, and they will have 11 picks to work with this year.
